Soulages Exhibition at the Pompidou Centre, Paris

From 14 October 2009 to 8 March 2010, the Pompidou Centre is organising a major retrospective of the work of a great painter from the current French scene: Pierre Soulages. At the age of nearly 90, Pierre Soulages is recognised as one of the major figures of abstraction.

The exhibition looks back over 60 years of painting and offers a new interpretation of the artist’s work by highlighting the recent developments in his output.

The exhibition presents a hundred major works produced since 1946. Most of the paintings from recent years are being exhibited for the first time. Some large, recent polyptychs are presented hanging in space.

The first part of the exhibition places the emphasis on the founding period of Pierre Soulages’ work, with an important group of early paintings on paper and some famous tars on glass, along with a selection of his most representative paintings from the period 1950 to 1970.
