Franck Charel

Franck Charel is a French photographer passionate about travelling, but he has nevertheless chosen the most beautiful landscapes in France for his panoramic views. After a world tour for the Yann Arthus-Bertrand project "Earth from the Air", he devoted himself to his "France 360°" project and has shown us a country full of hidden treasures.

"Earth from the Air": the birth of a vocation

Born in 1971, Franck Charel has a diploma in management; after training at Altitude, Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s agency, he decided to take part in the colossal “Earth from the Air” project, an aerial photograph portrait of the planet.
For five years, at the rate of two weeks’ reporting a month, he flew over the world alongside the famous photographer, an experience rich in encounters and memories but also one that was particularly instructive for him, a man who had a passionate interest but, as yet, no formal photographic training.

The "France 360°" project

On his return from this wonderful reporting experience, during which he covered more than 35 countries, Franck Charel decided to photograph a country with a huge variety of landscapes “whose beauty is rarely equalled” but of which he in fact knew very little: France.
Greatly inspired by his travels but also influenced by
Steve McCurry and Sebastião Salgado, he became a freelance photographer in 2000 and specialised in taking panoramic views.  The "France 360°" project was born: Franck Charel took 360° panoramic photographs of the most remarkable French landscapes, but still carried on his traditional photography. Alongside this work, he completed reports for private clients such as Yves Rocher and Lacoste.

Franck Charel’s publications and projects

After four years spent cataloguing the main French landscapes, Franck Charel was contacted by the publishers les éditions du Chêne who commissioned his first book: Bretagne 360° (2003), followed by other books on the different regions of France. Two reports have also been published in Géo magazine and he is planning a second volume of France 360°, as well as a book in a more traditional format.  In 2008, Nouvelles Images decided to publish a series of posters with his shots of French landscapes and there will be a calendar in 2010:  Destination France?  He says he is proud that his work “interests a company like Nouvelles Images". A successful partnership based on mutual admiration.
