Biography
A passion for images
From his youth, Charlie Bobo developed a passion for images and studied Graphic and Applied Arts at the School of Industrial Design then at the National School of Fine Art in Paris.
Fascinated by pop art and Anglo-Saxon graphics, he began his career as an illustrator in the press (Biba, Lui, Play Boy, L'Etudiant, Le Nouvel Observateur, L'Expansion, l’Evénement du Jeudi, Le Monde), then in publishing (Gallimard, JC Lattès, J'ai Lu, Solar, Le Seuil, France Loisirs, Presses de la Cité, Artamtam). He has also worked occasionally with The Image Bank and Ikea.
Since 1990, he also taught illustration, trompe-l'oeil and decorative painting at the MJM Art School Paris, an Applied Arts school. From 1997 to 2003, he was also responsible for the “Ateliers de la Ville de Paris” decorative painting workshop - ADAC.
Alongside his career as an illustrator and teacher, Charlie Bobo has never stopped painting: “After trying various means of expression, I decided to dedicate myself to surrealistic and then symbolic painting.
He took his inspiration from music and his travels, and of course Vermeer, Paul Delvaux and Frank Zappa.
He is a member of the Taylor Foundation, an association of artists, painters, sculptors, architects, engravers and illustrators.
From 1998 onwards, he produced a large number of still lives and figurative representations of pigments. His work may be understood by considering three concepts: "context, container and content".
Aims and projects
"I would like to tell you about what led me very quickly to feel that the only response to this magnificent spectacle is that ‘state of art’ that usually grips you from a very early age. As if all questions could find their answer on these beautiful, immaculate, white paper or canvas surfaces that, day by day, end up capturing shadow or light and quite rarely both of these.”
"It may be that I have finished exploring figurative painting [...] I am currently working on a new series that uses nothing but stencils [...] This new direction is a continuation of kinetic art and pop art".
Exhibitions
The first Charlie Bobo exhibition took place in Paris in 1981 (J. Walter Thomson) and was followed by several other exhibitions, at the Town Hall in Neuilly sur Seine in 1988, the Guy Lecomte Gallery in 1994, the Art-Présent Gallery in 1998, the “Grand Marché de l’Art” at La Défense in 1999, the Françoise Guillou Gallery in 1999, the ADAC Gallery in 2000 and 2003, the Mark Hachem Gallery in 2005, the New York International Art + Design Fair in 2005 and the Béranger Gallery in Tours in 2007.
