Our Artists

Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard

Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard is a contemporary artist who uses real fish to create everyday scenes which she then photographs.  Though this eccentric world is not lacking in humour, the absurd, derisory nature of the scenarios cannot be ignored.  Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard’s key work is entitled “Modern Times” as a tribute to Charlie Chaplin’s film.

Biography

Puppet fish

Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard is a contemporary artist who has become well-known for the images she creates using real fish, which she places like little puppets and then photographs.
Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard’s passion for fish began in early childhood when she used to go fishing for pleasure.
At the time, she played with mice that she kept on a lead and dressed up in tiny clothes made with her mother’s help.  She took photos of them by placing them in sets that she had made by hand.
Her law studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin did not divert her from her love of animals, especially fish.  For over 10 years, she has been designing meticulous, detailed scenarios into which she places real (dead) fish.

Modern Times

Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard is an all-round artist: author, director, actress, costume designer, interior designer and unit photographer.
Once dressed and placed in sets, these ‘actors’ mimic our funny ways in scenes of everyday life or illustrations of contemporary themes at the heart of public debate such as prison, mass production work, the homeless, consumer society, pollution and global warming....
This dramatisation of the ins-and-outs of the human comedy operates as a metaphor that covers all the codes in our society. In Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard’s work, the fish symbolises humanity. It is like a role-play, a fable or tale with a moral at the end, in which human caricatures show us an ironic view of our consumer society.
Though this eccentric world is not lacking in humour, the absurd, derisory nature of the scenarios cannot be ignored.
Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard’s key work is entitled “Modern Times’ as a tribute to Charlie Chaplin’s film, which Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard gladly mentions when she is asked about her influences, alongside Kasimir Malevitch, The Bauhaus, Andy Warhol and Thomas Demand.
Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard says that she is also inspired by sweet shelves in shops, feast days, television, magazines, radio, life in the streets, family scenes...

Umanofish and other projects

Apart from photographs and exhibitions, Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard seeks to turn her fish into objects. Umanofish is the logo for a series of by-products created from drawings and fish portraits. She also hopes to design an underwear range to allow her fish to talk “perhaps using cartoon speech bubbles” and to produce a series of video-clips or short films.
